CACTI SUBURBIA: STRUGGLE AND METAPHOR

Although the origins of the cactus plant can be traced back to the Americas, it is interesting to note that the Italians were some of the first non-indigenous peoples to introduce it to Australian shores (Barlow, 2005, p. 4). PROSE POETRY: AN OXYMORON?

For nearly three years now, I have conducted fortnightly poetry workshops at the Fremantle Arts Centre for a very vibrant group of people, most of whom are members of OOTA (Out Of The Asylum). One of the thematic threads that has run through these workshops has been the attempt to define exactly what makes something ‘poetic’ or not. Among our tentative conclusions has been the probability that poetry is not confined to verse form, meaning verse that accords with prescribed rules of construction and meter. This seemed confirmed during a session that focused on the nature of prose poetry.
